World of the Karo

The Karo people are mostly farmers and small tradesmen, as most still reside in the lowlands and highlands regions. There are 5 "margas": Karo-Karo, Sembiring, Perangin-Angin, Ginting, and Tarigan, each of which is a small sub-group of the Karo. Each group when marrying must marry out to another sub-group. For example an Tarigan cannot marry another Tarigan. The culture follows a set of "rules" called the adat, which provides a basic guideline for the culture to follow. This cultural guideline is a similar code-of-conduct, which shows Karo how to lead their lives and how to address others in the culture.
